During my final year in design school, I worked on a collaborative augmented reality app for vocational training in the textile industry called Aluco. I also wrote a thesis about the use of digital tools in learning a trade.

I decided to make my end-of-studies project about textile because I wanted to explore a completely new field and textile is an industry that holds an important place in my hometown's history. I started by investigating that industry: I visited textile companies, interviewed employees, learned about the production chain, wearable technologies, jobs and training, environmental and economical issues... I found out that the know-hows of the French textile industry were slowly disappearing and that employers are facing major skills management challenges.



These researches are detailed in my thesis: I wrote about learning know-hows, the challenges French textile companies are facing, and mainly about the rise of ICT in education, with a focus on digital tools to learn know-hows. It is available in French here.

The researches also led me to imagine several ideas for apps, and after making rapid prototypes and storyboards, I chose to develop one of them for my end-of-study project. Aluco is an Android augmented reality app that allows employees to record their know-hows by simply adding different types of content to a tablet, discuss technical and vocational training or learn new know-hows.

Design & Usability

I designed the app in Photoshop and Illustrator and I created an interactive prototype with Flinto to test the interface. I also developed part of the app where you can learn about one workspace in augmented reality with Unity 3D and Vuforia. The company Carpentier & Preux, who manufactures lace, was kind enough to let me test the prototypes with its employees. I had to be especially careful about making the content easy to access and manipulate by all employees. They have to be able to add or read about extended information through different formats (images, videos and texts) and switch between a 3D and an augmented reality representation of a workspace very easily. That way the app will reinforce the collaboration between current employees and help new employees learn know-hows.
